Congratulations to former CHVFD member Cherika Lucas on receiving the Emergency Dispatcher of the Year Award! She was commended for her handling of a police inccident where the following occurred:
"On September 2, 2009, at approximately 9:43 a.m., a Prince George's County Police Officer advised that he was assisting the Anne Arundel County Police Department with a vehicle pursuit occupied by a suspect wanted for questioning in a double homicide. Recognizing the magnitude of resources needed to efficiently and effectively handle the incident, veteran Emergency Dispatcher II, Cherika Lucas dedicated her full time and attention rendering assistance to the police officers by broadcasting an immediate lookout for the suspect vehicle to all neighboring jurisdictions and made appropriate notifications to her Supervisor of the incident.
Ms. Lucas continuously updated public safety personnel as the location of the pursuit changed and warned police officers that the occupant may be armed and dangerous. The pursuit traveled through residential neighborhoods in Maryland and into Washington, DC, where the suspect was fatally shot by police.
Ms. Lucas' experience, calm demeanor, and professionalism significantly contributed to the successful resolution of this dangerous situation where no injuries were sustained by public safety personnel. It is the aforementioned reason that the Prince George's County, Maryland Office of Homeland Security, Public safety Communications nominated and selected Cherika Lucas for Emergency Dispatcher of the Year Award."
